Mary Benevento Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Connecticut Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
Eligibility
- Any male or female student in the graduating class of a high school or preparatory school who is a United States citizen and a Connecticut resident may apply. Applicants must intend to pursue professional training in one of the following areas: health education (school health teaching specifically — not nursing, public health, or psychology), physical education, recreation, or dance.
- The applicant must plan to enroll in a certified bachelor’s degree program at a collegiate institution located in Connecticut.
Selection standards
- Applicants will be evaluated on academic achievement, demonstrated competence, promise for success in the chosen profession, and overall character and worthiness.
Required application materials
- A copy of the student’s official transcript.
- A personal statement, no longer than 300 words, describing educational objectives that qualify the applicant for this scholarship and summarizing school and extracurricular activities and accomplishments. (Do not submit duplicated reports of accomplishments.)
- One letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or an adult advisor connected with an activity in which the student participates.
Award format and disbursement
- Scholarships are issued as a certificate of award contingent upon enrollment in an accredited undergraduate program. After the college or university confirms the student’s enrollment to CTAHPERD, CTAHPERD will send a check for $1,000 (paid as $500 for each of two semesters) to the institution, where it will be applied as a credit on the student’s account. The funds may be used for tuition, books, or room and board.
Conditions for revocation
- Any unused credit may be revoked if the student engages in conduct that conflicts with the institution’s standards of law, order, or morality. Credit will also be withdrawn if the student transfers and is no longer a major in one of the four eligible fields.
How to apply
